Obesity: America’s Epidemic

major epidemic

Obesity has become a major epidemic in America, both for adults and children, and it’s something that is very dangerous to your health. Being obese means that you have too much body fat, and it is not the same as being overweight. What causes obesity? The major cause of obesity means taking in more calories than your body burns every day. Eating too much food, drinking too much alcohol and not getting enough exercise are the main reasons that a person becomes obese.

Many people blame fast food restaurants for the obese epidemic that have consumed America. The availability of quick and unhealthy food means that more and more people are making poor decisions when it comes to the food they eat. Instead of cooking a well-balanced meal at home that contains the right amount of calories, people are choosing to grab a bite at McDonald’s, Burger King and Taco Bell, all of which have items on their menu that contain much larger amounts of calories.

With or without fast food, taking in more calories than you burn is the biggest cause of obesity, but some people have also experienced major weight gain when they quit smoking, go through menopause or experience thyroid disease. If you have any of these diseases, it’s very important that you see your doctor, as they can prescribe you with medication that can control your disease and teach you about making the right lifestyle choices to better manage your obesity.

What are the consequences of being obese? Some people think that being obese only affects their looks, but obesity can actually have a negative effect on other areas of your health. Anyone who is obese is twice as likely to die early than someone who is a healthy weight. Obesity has also been linked to diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea and even strokes and cancer. This is why it’s extremely important that you take the necessary steps to treat your obesity before it causes major diseases that can impact your health.

What about obese children? Children become obese the same way adults do—by intaking more calories than they burn. Most children don’t have the knowledge to understand that they could be consuming too many calories or unhealthy foods, so it’s important for parents to teach children about the importance of making healthier food choices and exercising. Children often tend to mimic the adults in their lives, so make sure that you are also making smart food choices and exercising so that your child learns the right thing to do.

How can obesity be treated? In reality, the only way to treat obesity is to make major lifestyle changes.  You need to cut down on a number of calories your intake and eat healthier items, such as vegetables and fruits instead of cakes and candies.

You also need to make sure that you start to live an active lifestyle. You should start exercising more—even taking a walk every day will help you lose weight. The point of losing weight is to burn more calories than you take in, so any amount of exercise will help.
